MASSIVE PROTEST ERUPTS IN ABUJA OVER NNAMDI KANU’S CONTINUED DETENTION

A massive protest broke out early this morning, Monday, October 20, 2025, in Abuja as supporters of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), stormed the streets demanding his immediate and unconditional release.

Eyewitnesses reported that protesters converged at major points around the Federal Capital Territory, chanting pro-freedom songs and carrying placards calling for justice. Security forces responded swiftly, deploying large contingents of police officers who fired tear gas to disperse the crowd.

The demonstration, which drew thousands of participants from across different states, was described by observers as one of the most intense pro-Kanu rallies in recent times. Protesters accused the Nigerian government of deliberately ignoring multiple court rulings that had previously ordered the release of the IPOB leader.

> “We cannot continue to watch our leader languish unlawfully while those in power trample on justice,” said one protester before police intervention forced the crowd to scatter.

ARRESTS OF LAWYERS AND FAMILY MEMBERS

During the protest, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, one of Nnamdi Kanu’s principal lawyers, was reportedly arrested alongside Prince Emmanuel Kanu, the younger brother of the IPOB leader. According to Ejimakor’s verified social-media statement, they were detained by officers of the FCT Command CID in Abuja.

Reports from The Guardian, AP News, and All Africa confirmed that several other protesters were also arrested, though the exact number remains uncertain. Sources within the legal team allege that those detained were beaten before being taken into custody.

As of press time, no official police statement has been issued regarding the reason for the arrests or the current condition of those held.

CALLS FOR JUSTICE

Supporters continue to demand that President Tinubu’s administration comply with the rulings of Nigerian courts and international human-rights bodies concerning Kanu’s case.

Human-rights activists argue that the ongoing detention violates both local and international legal standards.

> “This struggle is not about politics but about truth, justice, and freedom,” a senior member of IPOB stated during the protest.
