Political Scandal Erupts in Enugu State as PDP Collapses into APC Under Governor Mbah

Enugu State, long considered a stronghold of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), is now at the center of a growing political scandal as several top party members defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) under the watch of Governor Peter Mbah. What appears on the surface as a political realignment is being seen by many as a betrayal of the people’s mandate — and a calculated move by political elites who allegedly rigged their way into power, only to abandon the platform once the job was done.


This mass defection has triggered widespread criticism, especially among those who supported the PDP in good faith. Many believe that the very individuals who manipulated the electoral system to secure victory are now switching sides to secure continued relevance and access to federal power.


Rigging Allegations and Fallout

The 2023 elections in Enugu were marred by allegations of widespread irregularities. From voter suppression to manipulated results, the PDP’s victory was contested both in court and in public opinion. Despite securing the governorship, a dark cloud of controversy has hung over the administration ever since.


Rather than defending the party’s reputation or rebuilding public trust, several of its top members — including local government leaders and state assembly figures — have now defected to the APC. Critics argue this confirms what many suspected all along: that loyalty to PDP was never about ideology or the people, but about access to power.


A Desperate Move or Strategic Miscalculation?


This sudden alignment with the APC is being seen by many as a desperate attempt to stay relevant ahead of 2027. With the APC controlling the federal government, defectors may believe they are securing their political future. But this move may backfire.
