🔁 POWER RECYCLING IN NIGERIA: WHY THE SAME FACES NEVER LEAVE

INTRODUCTION

Nigeria is a country with a rich population of energetic, educated youth, yet many leadership positions remain occupied by individuals who have served in government for decades. This persistent trend of power recycling has become a national issue that demands thoughtful attention.

🏛️ WHEN FAMILIAR NAMES KEEP RETURNING

From military eras to democratic elections, many of Nigeria's top political figures have maintained influence across changing governments. While experience is valuable, the absence of new voices in leadership stifles innovation and weakens democracy.

Citizens often witness the same leaders returning in various capacities—moving from one role to another—without substantial evidence of progress or accountability.

👥 AGE IS NOT THE ISSUE—ACCESS AND OPPORTUNITY ARE

The concern is not about age, but about access. When political opportunities are restricted to a few individuals or families, younger, qualified Nigerians are sidelined.

For democracy to thrive, inclusiveness must be prioritized. Nigeria’s future depends on opening political space to new thinkers and competent candidates from all backgrounds.

🧱 BARRIERS TO NEW LEADERSHIP

Several factors prevent fresh leadership from emerging:

High campaign and nomination costs

The influence of political gatekeepers

Limited media coverage for newer candidates

Internal party structures that favor established figures

These barriers make it difficult for younger citizens or first-time candidates to compete fairly.

🛑 WHY THIS MATTERS

When power is concentrated within a small group over time, it can lead to:

Repetition of ineffective policies

Lack of public accountability

Reduced public trust in democratic institutions

No society can grow if it repeats the same patterns and expects different results.

🗳️ THE WAY FORWARD

To build a stronger democratic future, Nigeria must:

1. Encourage political participation across generations

2. Reduce entry barriers for new candidates

3. Promote issue-based campaigns over personality-based politics

4. Strengthen electoral transparency and public oversight

📣 AS THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE, I MUST SAY THIS:

Nigeria's potential is immense, but it will remain unrealized unless political inclusion becomes more than a slogan.

Our democracy must be about representation, renewal, and responsibility, not repetition.

Let the best ideas win, regardless of age, wealth, or status. Let new leaders emerge and help shape the nation as we desire
