POLITICS OF TODAY AND THAT OF YESTERDAY
Politics has changed a lot over time. What we see in leadership, elections, and public service today is different from what people experienced many years ago. Let’s look at the differences between the politics of yesterday and today, and what it means for us.
1. LEADERS THEN WERE MORE HONEST
Yesterday:
Many leaders in the past served with honesty and a clear mission. They were not perfect, but they cared about the people. Names like Nnamdi Azikiwe and Obafemi Awolowo are remembered for their vision and service.
Today:
Now, many politicians are only after money and power. They focus more on their pockets than the people. Corruption is more common, and trust is broken.
2. POLITICAL PARTIES HAD MEANING
Yesterday:
Political parties stood for something. Each one had clear goals and ideas for the country. People followed parties based on what they believed.
Today:
Parties are now just platforms for personal ambition. Many politicians switch from one party to another without shame, just to win elections.
3. PEOPLE WERE MORE INVOLVED
Yesterday:
Citizens were active in politics. They attended meetings, voted with confidence, and held leaders accountable. Politics started from the grassroots.
Today:
Although people are more aware, many no longer trust the process. Voter turnout is low, and election rigging has discouraged many.
4. ELECTIONS WERE CLEANER
Yesterday:
There were some problems, but elections were mostly based on popularity and performance. Violence was not as common.
Today:
Elections are full of money politics, vote buying, thuggery, and fake results. The will of the people is often ignored.
5. YOUTH AND WOMEN HAD A ROLE, BUT LIMITED
Yesterday:
Young people and women supported campaigns and played background roles. Few were in leadership positions.
Today:
We hear more about youth and women in politics, but the truth is that the system still shuts them out. Many are used as political tools, not leaders.
6. ACCOUNTABILITY WAS STRONGER
Yesterday:
Leaders feared the people. If they failed, their own communities could remove or shame them. Traditional leaders had influence.
Today:
Many politicians hide behind power. Even when they fail or steal public funds, they still walk free. The law is weak, and justice is slow.
CONCLUSION
The difference between yesterday and today is clear. Politics used to be about service, but now it feels like a business.
As the voice of the people, I must say: we need a change.
We must go back to politics of truth, honesty, and service. If we keep choosing leaders based on money and lies, w
e will keep suffering. But if we rise and speak, Nigeria can still get better.
