THE SUSPENSION OF ELECTED MEMBERS: A BLOW TO DEMOCRACY IN NIGERIA
Across Nigeria, many elected officials gain office through questionable means, including rigged elections. Once these members dare to voice disagreement or challenge the status quo, they are quickly suspended or sidelined. This pattern is not isolated but systematic, serving to silence opposition and unjustly consolidate power.
The recent suspensions in Kano, Rivers, and other states are glaring examples. Instead of fostering a democratic environment where diverse voices contribute to governance, the leadership suppresses dissent by removing elected representatives. This approach violates the very essence of democracy and disenfranchises the electorate.
Such actions breed mistrust among citizens, weaken democratic institutions, and create a culture of fear and silence. For democracy to thrive in Nigeria, it must be protected from such abuses. Elected members must be allowed to perform their duties without fear of arbitrary suspension, and electoral processes must be transparent and credible.
It is imperative that Nigerians and the international community demand accountability and reforms that uphold democratic values. Only then can Nigeria build a political system that truly represents the will of its people.
