NIGERIA CAN WORK, BUT ONLY WITH HONEST AND FOCUSED LEADERSHIP – PETER OBI

In a strong message on the state of the nation, Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has decried the worsening hunger and poverty affecting millions of Nigerians, blaming it squarely on incompetent and self-serving leadership.

Citing recent data from the United Nations, Obi highlighted that 34 million Nigerians are projected to face acute food insecurity, while 63% of the population—about 133 million people—are living in multidimensional poverty. He noted that inflation, even by officially suppressed figures, is approaching 30%, with unemployment and poor economic management erasing the once vibrant middle class.

“Families who once lived stable lives are now slipping into poverty,” Obi stated, adding that this was not an unavoidable crisis but the product of leadership lacking both capacity and compassion.

Drawing a comparison with Argentina, Obi pointed out that by early 2024, more than 52% of Argentines were living in poverty, with inflation above 200%. Yet, within two years, decisive reforms—cutting waste in governance and stabilizing the economy—reduced poverty to 38.1%, dropped extreme poverty to 8.2%, and brought inflation down to just 2–3% monthly. By 2025, urban poverty had fallen to 31.6%, lifting millions out of poverty and restoring investor confidence.

According to Obi, both Argentina’s president and Nigeria’s current leadership assumed office in the same year—proving that while two years may not achieve a total turnaround, it is enough to kickstart genuine transformation if leaders are honest, focused, and committed to the people.

He stressed that Nigeria can work, hunger can be reduced, and dignity can be restored, but only if corruption is confronted head-on and governance is redirected toward the people. “Our nation requires leaders who will put the people first, manage resources prudently, and reject corrupt practices,” Obi emphasized.

He concluded that Nigeria’s transformation will require tackling corruption, cutting the cost of governance, and investing in critical areas such as education, healthcare, and poverty reduction—lessons other nations have applied with remarkable results.

Mr Peter Obi stated this on his x (formally Twitter) handle.

“A New Nigeria g

is POssible,” Obi affirmed.
